E4, Germany

Gibraltar – Pyrenees – Lake Constance – Balaton – Rila – Kreta - Cyprus

With 10.450 km (11.773 km including all detours and alternatives) the E4 is by far the longest European trail, although there is a substantial gap in construction in Romania/Bulgaria. The alternative through Serbia is ready waymarked. Starting off in the southern tip of Spain in Tarifa, it leads northeast, across the Pyrenees through France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia (alternative Romania under construction), Bulgaria and Greece. The Peloponnes part (260 km) has been renovated in 2012 and 2013. Several ferry rides lead across to the island of Crete and finally Cyprus.

After leaving Switzerland, the route offers a choice between the alpine route, for experienced mountain hikers only, and a less demanding subalpine alternative. They converge again before leaving Austria.

Spain (2.034 km)

  • Positive The scenery was fantastic, very varied, & unspoilt - high mountains, lakes, forests. Friendly people, simple cafes & guesthouses and OK to camp if necessary. Some of the trails were excellent, with lovely old cobbled mule paths and stone bridges, well waymarked and maintained. We didn't stick to the E4 but worked out our own route using a variety of paths. Excellent GPS compatible Anavasi maps.
  • Negative Some of the trails were not maintained and could be overgrown or hard to find. Some precipitous stretches and scree need care and a good head for heights. Some of the official E4 route follows relatively boring tarred roads (tho still good scenery, little traffic), but it's often possible to find alternatives. Beware of the fierce shepherd dogs! As always in the high mountains, weather change fast

  • direction, people, books
  • hi there!
i was wondering if it would be possible to walk this trail in the other direction - so in other words, is the trail well marked both ways? i'll be walking from vienna to salzburg, so my question applies to the austrian bit of the trail.
also i'd like to know if there are any books or maps available about this part.
and last but not least: would you reckon i'd meet many fellow hikers on the way?
thanks so much for your answer, and thumbs up for the website! it's such a great help.

    • marked both ways, but it pays off to have the following guidebook:

Voralpiner Weitwanderweg 04, Wienerwald – Salzkammergut – Berchtesgaden – Bodensee. Überarbeitete Auflage 2011, 158 Seiten, Eigenverlag der OeAV-Sektion Weitwanderer. Erhältlich über die Sektionsadresse sowie bei Freytag & Berndt, www.freytagberndt.at

In summer and fall you are sure to meet other hikers

  • GPX, GPS File
  • Is there a GPX file for a GPS of the E4 anywhere on the net?

    Thanks, David

    • David, we are working on it as Traildino. But I can give you some advice: check this page.
      http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/en/?zoom=9&lat=36.44008&lon=-5.30297&hill=0#
By clicking on "Routes" you get access to the GPX file. I know from experience that the routes that hikers added to OSM usually have a good quality. However, the this E4 is only partly added to OSM, so you will find only about 50% of the entire E4 covered in this track. Well, it's a very long way of course!
