Who was Klaus Störtebeker? He was a feared pirate who roamed the coast, but ultimately did not escape his fate: in 1401 he was sentenced to death. This path is named after the villain, or maybe heroe. The trail runs along the coastline of Ostfriesland and the North Sea. It connects to the Dutch coastal trail, the Wad- and Wierdenpad. This makes the Störtebekerweg a part of the North Sea Trail, although this seems not to be the policy of the North Sea Trail Organisation.
The walk is flat. Much of it goes on dikes or besides them, on the seaside or the landside. This is an open landscape with distant views and ever changing skies.
