Hadrian's Wall Path

84 miles, 135 km, 7 days

National Trail

This National Trail runs close to the defence wall built by Roman emporer Hadrian in the second century AD. Although the path is not very difficult, due to its distance from populated areas, careful planning in advance is necessary. The remoteness of Northumberland and the relative flatness of the walk with its great views, give it a special flavour and make it a popular walk.

  • Positive Breathtaking views. Loneliness. Sheep. Nice people all along. Cultural Heritage (Roman)
  • Negative Accommodation a bit off the route on certain parts. Should have considered camping...?

  • Positive the views are breath-taking; the historical sights are numerous (there's history every step of the way) and the trail is very well marked
  • Negative the weather

  • Positive The historical information was very good and the trail is well serviced by B&B/Baggage transfer/transport.
  • Negative Very boggy section between Carraw and Sewingshields Crags which requires the walker to meander a bit to cross a lot of pools of standing water.
  • Aaron Barnes August 2005
  • Rate 8
  • Positive Historical aspect - make sure that time is set aside to visit the Forts and Museums along the route, especially Vindolanda. Central section (and best preserved section of wall) is one of the finest day walks in the country. Passport system in place in which you can gain stamps for a completion certificate. Great walk through Newcastle City Centre also.
  • Negative Difficult to say - at times, sections can be a little tedious - long straight path right next to a road. Section from Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway has to be carefully planned to link in with public transport - you may find yourself racing the bus to get to the finish on time!
