50 km, Hong Kong Island, The Peak – Big Wave Bay (West - East)
Hong Kong Island was the original stronghold of the English, developed from the Victorian age onwards. The island is the scene of one of the most impressive cityscapes in the world, best seen from mainland Kowloon or from above. The latter is the privilege of those who venture on the 50 km Hong Kong Trail, or 港島徑.
The hike offers some unbelievable contrasts. The center of Hong Kong Island is a series of mountains up till 500 meter. Indeed, the trail starts on Victoria Peak, the popular viewpoint which can be reached by the famous Peak Tram. Frequently, the trail will return to views over the skyscrapers. But on the southern side of the island, the walk contours the green hills and skirts the water reservoirs. Continuing East, the Hong Kong Trail passes beautiful bays and beaches, and even small villages.
The trail is well marked and documented. Some hill climbs can be strenuous. The trail can be divided in different stages, each within reach of public transport.
