This path is the favorite of the hiking club in Northwest Germany, the Wiehengebirgsverband Weser-Ems. The reason is that the Geestweg is very varied and crosses many typical landscapes of this northwestern corner of Germany. The trail is located to the south of the low-lying Ostfriesland. From the town of Meppen it runs in eastern direction to the city of Bremen, roughly between the rivers Ems and Weser. The name “Geestweg” is derived from the word “Geest”, which denotes a slightly elevated ridge of sand or clay, originating in the last ice age. For centuries, farmers have built their farmsteads here and cultivated their corn fields. In prehistoric times, people built their dolmens here. The trail takes us to all these phenomena. In addition, the trail leads us past many historical buildings and places as well.
