Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail, Balla - Murrisk, 61 km, 3 days

Croagh Patrick is the name of a cone shaped mountain in County Mayo. This mountain - also called The Reek or Saint Patrick’s Stack - is 764 metres high and topped with a chapel, St Patrick’s Oratory. It is the site of a yearly pilgrimage in July, Reek Sunday, when up to 15.000 pilgrims climb it, sometimes barefoot.

Our trail starts in the village of Balla, another early Christian monastic site. The path follows part of an old pilgrim route. Wandering between fields and farms one approaches the holy mountain.

The route does not include the ascent of the mountain. But it is easy to jump on the heavily eroded track from the village of Murrisk. From the chapel at the top one has a great view over the mountains of Joyce Country, the North Atlantic and the myriad of little islands in Clew Bay.

This may be the beginning of a new career for you, because it has been proven the mountain keeps a gold treasure worth hundreds of millions of Euro’s. Mining, however, is not allowed.
