Crnogorsko Transverzala or CT-1, 140 km, 8 days
This long distance trail has been established a long time ago, long before the coastal trail was created. For people from Montenegro and neighbouring countries, finishing this 140-km 8-days walk, crossing the wildest and most beautiful mountain scenery from inland Montenegro, is seen as a real accomplishment.
The trail starts in the Durmitor area, where Montenegro's (arguably) highest mountain is situated. From the jagged white peaks in this national park, the trail heads east and calls upon the Sinjajevina mountains, the Bjelasica mountains where the virgin forests of Biogradska Gora is located, and – heading south – the Kučka Krajina bordering Albania, where the peaks reach even higher than Durmitor.
The trail is marked with red circles / white dots. You must bring your tent and carry food and often water. Halfway you will cross the main route to Serbia, enabling you to replenish supplies. The hike is lonesome and pretty hard in places. In early summer, there will still be snow on higher altitudes. You will be rewarded with a fascinating landscape, both wild and green, dark and white, and it's for sure off the beaten track.
Maps and guides do exist, but are hard to find. Contact local branches of the Planinarski Savez Crne Gore, the Mountaineering Association of Montenegro.
