East from the line Hamar – Lillehammer lies a high plateau where you will probably find not many other hikers. The plateau is bare, and is the southernmost extension of the mountains starting in Dovrefjell and continuing in Rondane. Further south, the mountains are followed up by the extensive forests of east Norway.
Start east from Hamar and walk to the north over the plateau. A string of unstaffed huts works its way to the Lillehammer area. Then the popular hike Lillehammer – Rondane takes over, and the facilities get better.
Hedemarken is a good hiking option if you're looking for a region with a rich vegetation, flowers, and wildlife. Among the wild animals, predators like bear, lynx and wolf can be seen, if lucky.
