Maio is a flat island, with some small mountains and hills rising out of its interior. The coastline is pretty, with long stretches of fine sand in between rocky outcrops. Moreover, the island has trees and shrubs and plantations. The 8.000 inhabitants live in villages along the coast, and some in the interior. When arriving by plane on the island, the beach resorts are on walking distance. The dry interior offers an attractive biotope for hiking. A walk around the island’s coast is also possible. Another feature to explore are the islands salt flats.
